He reached for me!
Goose reached for me this weekend! Amazing. He was playing with his toys and suddenly he just turned towards me and put out his arms. I thought he was just being silly, so I picked him up and put him back down again to test what I thought had just happened. He did it again! Oh God I love that baby!

A new skill or a scary behavior??
Goose decided to try, horror of horrors, TUMMY sleeping last night. I am terrified he will stop breathing if he sleeps on his tummy!! I know it is not likely, especially since he CAN roll over on his own - but still. Aren't they supposed to back sleep for 12 months? Ugh. I turned him over and I think he slept for most of the night on his back, (I know this because I'm nuts and actually set my alarm for 3am to check on him and he was on his back at that time still). But when I got him up at 6 - he was on his tummy up against the crib railings! He was calm and just kind of entertaining himself while he was waiting for me to come get him, but I was nervous to see him like that. I hope tummy sleeping at this point is ok!

Oh My God!
My child is taking a SCHEDULED nap! This is truly a miracle, as in a gift from GOD. We have only been on the SleepEasy Program for one night. Is it a fluke? Or has Goose actually learned in one night, that the crib means sleep-time?? Only time will tell, but thank God for this nap!
Sleeping again?
As some of you know, our Goose has been sleeping through the night for a long time now, with episodes of regressions lasting, at most, a week. He would always return back to sleeping through the night with no real problems though.
Well 4 weeks ago TODAY, I jinxed myself. I made the mistake of telling other new mom's with children the same age. I remember in my head thinking, "Don't Brag!". And I didn't. But did I jinx myself just by the sheer act of telling someone? Possibly. Because that was the day everything changed.
Up until that night, we could almost always put GOOSE in his crib at night and he would go to sleep for several hours. But starting 4 weeks ago today, Goose began to scream - a lot. He refused to go to sleep on his own. He wanted to be nursed to sleep. Then he would wake up screaming out like he was in pain. So we finely bit the bullet and put him on Zantac. Which helped tremendously, for about a week. The painful screaming subsided, and he began sleeping again at night, but still would not return to his old way of falling asleep on his own in his crib. Then a week after that he decided he just wouldn't fall asleep at all.
I honestly became so worried for him. I know he can sleep well at night and I know he is happier when he does. But I just cannot figure out what is keeping him up. So yesterday we bought the Book, The Sleep Easy Solution, by Jennifer Waldburger and Jill Spivack. I followed their plan, and Goose fell asleep on his own and stayed asleep for 11 whole hours!! This I found most impressive, because that is the EXACT length of time the authors said children his age should be sleeping at night.
This book is a middle-of-the-road book when it comes to crying it out. She calls it the "Cry-Least" method, instead of the "no-Cry" or "all-cry" method. That's what drew me to the book, because I just cannot and will not leave my baby in his room alone for hours to cry himself to sleep, with no help what-so-ever.
The book does use some crying it out, which I know, I know, I know, is controversial. I have had mixed feelings about it from the get-go. On the one hand, I believe in answering your child every time he cries, but then on the other hand, I think that when babies reach a certain level of ccomprehension, its time to take the lead on their behavior and TEACH them what they need to know. I have read so many reviews on CIO that say how neglectful parents are for letting their children cry. And to a certain degree that is true, but not when it comes to teaching your children something they absolutely NEED to know and they are only crying out in resistance to it. PLUS, as I said before, I chose this book specifically because you DON'T have to leave you child alone to cry for hours.
Now we DID have some crying: Goose cried off and on for 23 minutes last night before he fell fast asleep for 11 hours. Then this morning instead of crying for me to come get him, he woke up HAPPY, making cute noises. When I went into his room he grinned from ear to ear and seemed so well-rested. I can't wait for tonight see how he does. I AM SO PROUD OF HIM! I definitely recommend this book to anyone at the end of their rope, with a frustrated child, that does not feel comfortable with the "Ferber" method.

Goose meets Uncle D!
Having met my husband in Boston, it's only natural that many of our relatives live up North. Yesterday an unexpected opportunity to see my brother-in-law came about. He was traveling through our state on business and just happened to be within 20 minutes of our home! So I spent the day getting the house ready and food shopping. He could only stay a little over an hour as he was traveling with a huge truck full of sound equipment and he and his boss needed to get back on the road and find a hotel for the night.
It was a fun visit! I was so proud to show off our new house and, of course, our new baby Goose! He will be on the road all day today getting back to his family wayyyyy up North, but I'm so glad we were able to see him.

5 months old and first solids!
Hurray for Goose! He is now eating solids and LOVING it! We have been experimenting with rice cereal for a few weeks now, but he just didn't like it very much. He would tend to get a little frustrated after a few bites and I didn't want to push it for fear of making him dislike eating all together!
But recently he has been showing a strong interest in watching us eat. We pull his high chair up to the table with us while we have dinner so he can feel like he is a part of the group and lately he has been following our forks from plate to mouth like a tennis match, or a basketball game in overtime! He has also been mimicking our facial expressions while we eat by making "chewing" faces at us. So we decided it was time to start him on actual baby food. No more rice cereal, fake-o, food!
It's hard to tell in these pictures, but he did actually enjoy himself with these peas, although he enjoyed the sweet potatoes a few nights later even more. I guess it is the strange sensation of texture in their mouths that makes babies screw up their faces like this! Anyway, it was very cute.
In other news, beingn 5 months old has opened new and interesting doors for our little Goose baby. He can now roll front to back and back to front, as well as sit up by himself for a few seconds before leaning too far in and toppling over. He has also begun doing the "airplane" and pushing up on his hands while on his tummy.
Let's see...what else can my gosling do? Reach and grab! That's his favorite - which makes it very difficult to type on the computer since he is how reaching for the keys and trying EAT the laptop! Thanks to my Ergo carrier, though, he is now being worn on my back and therefor it is less difficult for him to type his opinions over mine while blogging. :)
Peas PLEASE!

He Did it!
Goose is an official back-to-front-roller-overer! For a couple of days he's been coming really close - he'll roll over to the point of no return - but then return...Well, yesterday I left the room for about 3 seconds, and OF COURSE it happened when I wasn't watching! Anyway, he's an expert now!
Now that he's mastered back-to-front rolling, he's now attempting front-to-back rolling. The funny thing is, Goose absolutely HATES to be on his tummy so when he actually finishes rolling over, he gets really mad! Poor thing.

Blogging with Baby
You may have noticed I have not been blogging quite as much as before Christmas. Well, there are two reasons for this. The first reason, is that my laptop died before Christmas and I was without one for a couple of weeks. The second reason, is that while I was waiting for my laptop to arrive, Goose began reaching for and grabbing whatever he sees! Add that to the fact he wants to be in the baby carrier all day, and you've got a pretty difficult typing situation on your hands! For example, right now Goose is facing out in his carrier, reaching with his left hand onto the keyboard. He is also squirming and protesting the fact that I have made him look in the same direction for more than 5 minutes! Ha!
It makes any kind of computer work very frustrating. Anyway, I am hoping that having a couple of set pieces I am working on at all times (see previous post) will allow me to get a little more blogging done! I guess the idea is that whenever I have 5 minutes of type time, I'll know what to type and therefore hopefully get more done! By the way, Goose had his 4 month checkup about a week ago. He is just about 15 pounds now and 25 inches! He has more than doubled his birthweight! Go GOOSE! (Or rather, Go Super Mom for breastfeeding on demand for 4 solid months!) :) Oh, and his first teeth are peeking out at us as well!
Hmmmm, Which one you toys wants to go in my mouth?

Teething is not so fun is it??
Well, that husband of mine went back to work this morning. I am missing him so much already. Its funny how used to things we get - and so quickly! He was only home for 2 and half weeks, but it feels as though it has always been that way. I don't know what I'll do today without his help! Goose has been teething (we think) and has become a REAL handfull.
For the most part, Goose has been sleeping through the night since he was 8 weeks old. Occasionally he would wake up once during the night for a couple of days, but he would go right back to sleeping through. Well, now he has started waking up several times each night. He hasn't done this since his first week home from the hospital.
And it isn't like his normal waking up either. He cries so hard! Last night hubby got up with him the first time woke up (1am), and he was crying so hard that I had to get up to calm him. Then he wanted to eat. He then woke up at 4am and 6am. He has also started waking up about an hour after you put him down on some nights. When that happens he gives a very sad sounding, scared cry.
He is also back to fussing all day, just like when he was a newborn. The only thing we can figure is that he must be teething. He's 4 months old and perhaps a little young to be getting his first teeth, but that's all we can come up with. He acts uncomfortable ALL DAY. Gnaws on anything he can fit into his mouth. Chin rash from drool. All the symptoms. Does anyone out there know when they usually GET their teeth after they start showing all the signs?

Colic Roars Its Ugly Head - againnnnnnn.
I really wish doctors could explain Colic better than just saying, Oh its an endless bout of crying for no known reason. I mean, there has to be a reason right? Ugh. Goose cried from 7am to about 9pm yesterday, taking small little breaks to nap. He is also suddenly not sleeping through the night, having gone back to waking at 3am for snacks. What is up little man?!
As a breastfeeding mom, the thing I keep thinking is what did I eat this weekend that was different than usual?? I did eat some extremely hot chili on Sunday night. Could that be it? I have read conflicting views on whether what you eat actually goes into your milk at all, so I'm somewhat torn on if that actually caused the problem - but it makes since right?
As for the nightwaking, I've read that babies have growth spurts around 3 months, so that may explain his renewed interested in midnight snacks. If any of you have experience with any of this, please share your story!! It will help me tremendously to cope with the stress of non-stop crying on very little sleep, to hear how others handle it. Thanks for reading!! Signed - Proud Mom to Mr. Colicy Fussy-Pants

Colic
Well my sweet little son has colic. I have always heard parents talking about colic and how awful it was, but not having experienced it myself I just took their stories with a grain of salt. I mean, techinically speaking, Colic is just long stretches of inconsolable crying and certainly my baby could never be "inconsolable". Not with such a loving mom as myself! Surely he can always be comforted by my gentle nature and loving touch?. NOPE! Colic is awful. All the stories are true. Goose is not comforted by my gentleness or love!
To describe Colic to those of you who have not experienced it: Imagine the most annoying sound you can possibly think of. Some good examples are nails on a chalkboard, the monotonous beep of the Emergency Broadcast System weekly test, and the sound a phone makes when left off the hook for too long. Got your sound? Ok - amplify the volume x10 and multiply the intensity by 2 or 3. Now listen to that sound for 4 or more hours straight per day. Also, take away any option what-so-ever of turning off the annoying sound. The sound can only cease of its own accord for a reason that you do not nor ever will know. THAT, my dear friends, is Colic.
Poor Goose cried so much, I finally concluded that something must be wrong. He wasn't eating normally and barely sleeping during the day. I took him to see our doctor yesterday thinking he must have an ear infection or SOMETHING. There was nothing wrong with our child at all. To top it off - Goose ceased all crying while at the doctor's office. In fact, he turned on all the charm he could muster! He made eyes at the doctor and cooed those sweet little sounds. "I swear he was not like this at home doctor!" I said. Sigh...The doctor left the room and Goose started up with the crying again!
At any rate, he was diagnosed with Colic and it was suggested that I try Mylicon Gas Relief drops on the child. Apparently they work on some children and not on others. Well - I'd like to send a big "shout out!" to the makers of Mylicon!!!! My kid is one of the kids that it works on!! YES!
Goose stopped crying. He also slept for hours after we got home, went to bed for the night an hour earlier than usual and slept this morning until his usual time. Thank you Mylicon!
If anyone has any experience with Colic, please leave your stories and suggestions here in the comments. I would love to hear what works for this!

Karma, or, Our First Glimpse Into Goose's Personality
My karmic retribution has arrived in the form of a tiny, adorable, helpless creature. My child is me...Stubborn and determined to do what he is not yet able! Irritated by his inabilities. Curious beyond all curiousness!!
Yesterday my child cried all day. This is not an exaggeration. He had small breaks in between the crying, but really he just cried all day. All day I tried to figure out what he wanted. Two days ago I could have just offered him milk and he would have been sublimely happy - but not yesterday. The "feed me" signals were going haywire and when I tried to feed him he would scream. This went on into the night when we finally figured out he wanted to be up and about LOOKING. He wanted to be held in a facing forward position and he wanted to be carted around the house for the rest of eternity.
Around 10.30pm he got drowsy and we put him in his crib and turned on his mobile. This got him so excited that he was up for another 2 hours! I thought mobiles were supposed to help babies sleep, not get them all riled up!
He would stare up that mobile and smile and then suddenly start kicking and swinging his arms as fast as he could and then he we would stop and cry. This scene just kept getting repeated and getting repeated. He was trying to get up there to play with his mobile! Poor thing! He just kept moving and moving and then not getting anywhere. He was very frustrated. So I picked him up and brought him level with the thing and then he cried even more! This is just like me - to be frustrated with my inability to do something BY MYSELF. Oh boy. Karma.
He is just like me I know it. He is going to want to do everything for himself and then get frustrated when he can't. He is going to fight with his stubborn nature until 20 years from now when he learns how to graciously accept help. As we southerners say - "Bless his little heart!"

First Night Away From Mom
I was looking forward to this day, though I admit I was hoping for a bit more separation anxiety on his part (because I was anxious and he was just like whatever mom). What I was looking forward to was Gooses's first night in his own room since arriving home from the hospital. And, despite my anxieties, it was a wonderful night for all.
We were going to wait until he was 10 weeks old to move him into his crib, but when 11 pm rolled around last night and he was still being fussy and my huband and I were about to keel over for want of sleep, we decided to just put him in his own room and let him be fussy all he wanted! As it turned out, his fuss completely diminished after we placed him in his crib and swaddled him. He didn't immediately fall asleep, but he seemed happy so we decided to go to bed.
But, wait a minute honey! What if he suffocates in the bumper pads? Well, I don't know dear husband do you think thats really possible, the bumpers seem really secure...Why don't we check it out online to be sure? Hmmm "The American Foundation of This and That" recomends against bumper pads. Help me get them off. But what if he bumps his head and gets hurt?? No, the "website of whatever and then some" says thats next to impossible. What if we can't hear him when he cries? Lets EACH put a monitor beside our bed on high volume just to be safe.
Its a wonder we ever fell asleep with so many dangerous situations just waiting to pounce on our son as soon we pulled up the sheets and closed our eyes! But sleep we did - and let me tell you - it was FABULOUS. It was uninterrupted. There were hours of it.
How much Goose slept I will never know. He was still making baby sounds at us through the monitor when I finally drifted off. What I do know, is that he did not wake me up for anything during the night and didn't wake me for breakfast until 7am!! After he ate breakfast, he decided to take a nap, so I put him back in his crib and here I am enjoying my 10 cent cup of coffee and indulging in a little me time. Ironically last night was also Goose's 2 month birthday. What a great night for a new milestone!

My Kid 1.0 Automatically Upgraded!
Has someone replaced my child with a bigger, more interactive version?? The Kid 1.0 version was so cute and cuddly, but this new Kid 2.0 is incredible!! The 1.0 version mostly cried, pooped and took intermitten naps, but the 2.0 does all that and more! PLUS: Kid 2.0 is almost twice as pudgy, making cuddle time even more snuggly!
Yes thats right everyone, my child has reached a milestone. Almost overnight, he has become a roly-poly smile machine!! Its awesome! I don't know when it happened, but yesterday I just realized that "Goose" (his other nickname!) has become substantially larger. He was nearly 7 lbs at birth, but on his gangly 22 inch frame, it made for one skinny baby. Well, our two month checkup isn't until next week, but I just know this kid has nearly doubled his weight. And he's stronger too. When I put him on my shoulder, he holds himself there and snuggles himself to sleep. What a wonderful feeling.
And then the best Kid 2.0 update - the SMILES! Goose has been smiling for a while, but never for a discernable reason (other than the usual prelude to a poop). Well, last night hubby and I were giving Goose his nightly bath when suddenly he shot pee straight up into the air! I screamed and tried to cover him up but it made both hubby and myself squeal with laughter. Then the most amazing thing happened - Goose looked up at us and smiled too!! It was his first interactive, social smile and it was beautiful - pee and all...!

Thanks to everyone who commented on my first post yesterday! I have really been enjoying reading my mama's blog and I guess I just finally caught the blogging bug! :)

I screamed and tried to cover him up but it made both hubby and myself squeal with laughter. Then the most amazing thing happened - Goose looked up at us and smiled too!! It was his first interactive, social smile and it was beautiful - pee and all...!

Evenings with New Baby, by: New Mom
My beautiful son is 7 weeks old. He has changed my life, definitely for the better, but I just never knew how hard it really is to be a parent. The most difficult thing, and most people have agreed with me on this, is the lack of sleep. I just never knew! You really just never know until you have a kid!
My evenings 2 months ago consisted of the following:
2 hours of tv, 1 hour hot bath, 30 minutes reading in bed, 8-10 hours of blessed sleep. I look at this list now and realize what a luxurious life I once had!
Now my evenings go like this:
Feed baby, bathe baby, feed baby, rock baby, feed baby, put baby down, lie down in bed, worry that baby isn't breathing, check breathing, lie back down, say prayer that baby won't stop breathing, sleep for 4-5 hours, wake up and praise God that baby is still breathing, change baby, feed baby, put baby back down, say another prayer that baby won't stop breathing, sleep for 2-3 more hours and then start day...WHEWWW!
And just when you think they have their schedule down - they change it! Night before last, my son, who usually falls asleep between 10 and 10.30 for the night, did not fall asleep until midnight. I was so tired with just this two hour change. And of course he wasn't happy about either! He cried the whole extra two hours he was awake. Yikes. (Does anyone out there have any tips on soothing baby in situations like that? Is that what is known as colic?)
All-in-all though, I think little "d" is doing pretty well in terms of night sleeping. I've heard so many horror stories from other super moms whose little darlings only slept for 2 hour increments at a time for months! My little guy usually goes at least 4.
And I really do miss my evenings of luxury, but now "d" is starting to smile up at me when he sees me hovering over him, and that small ounce of recognition is full of enough love to get me through. (That, and my husband draws a hot bath for me when I look a little too stressed!!) hehe. ;)
