SCREAMING

My child is currently in his crib taking a nap - which means it's naptime in the Goose house but nobody's nappin'! In fact what I should call it is the 9am ScreamFEST. Or the 12pm Screamin' Spectacular. How about the 10.30am Screamin' not-so-good-time?!

I am trying very hard to remain calm as my baby learns how to take a nap. He has been SCREAMING for 30 minutes. NO - nothing is wrong with him. I have checked on him several times and I promise I have attended to his every need, want, desire, everything. Everything, of course, except pick him and not make him take a nap. What is it with the screaming? Bedtime is no problem anymore. He's been doing great. Sometimes not even a whimper at bedtime (knock on wood), - but the naps. Oh My Good LORD.

And it isn't just one nap a day or every other day. It is literally, every...single...time...a nap is supposed to happen. What can I do? I can't not have him sleep? The poor thing needs sleep! Sigh....

What's that? Did I hear a pause in the screaming? Is he sleeping? Please oh please oh please oh please....

He just wants to be in charge of everything! When he decides the naps are his idea, he'll be fine!

oooooh girl. Can I just tell you that I COMPLETELY feel your pain. Are you at the point of hitting the wall yet? How about screaming into the pillow? Crying? Stomping?
It gets better.
It gets better.
It gets better.
I can't say that enough.
This, from a mommy of a collicky baby. Props to you. I could never hang in there long enough. I ALWAYS broke down. Hmm. Maybe this is due to the 2 hour stints he'd go on...? Maybe...

Hi! I just found your comment buried in my email - sorry!

OK, some babies are just hard. You just have to be the cowboy who wins at the Naptime Corrall.

My first question is, how long has he been awake? Maybe he is overstimulated. Weissbluff has this 2 yawn rule - as soon as they yawn 2x, down they go. Even if they just woke up 40 minutes ago. His other rule is to never let them be awake for more than 2 hours, never ever ever ever. I have found this to be a golden rule as well.

Ok my other thought is, does Tylenol aka Sweet Baby Juice help? He is right about the teething age. If you give him some Tylenol or Motrin and it works - voila. Keep him drugged till the little toofs poke.

Feel free to email me and I will bounce some more ideas off you!

One more thought - how much is he eating? He is probably ready for at least 2 solids a day, and maybe 3. He might be crying because he is hungry.

Email me and I will send you my schedule for a baby his age.

Hello! I'm just a new reader. ;)
I wanted to offer up a new suggestion, that I don't think I read here.
He might actually already be overly tired when you are trying to put him down for his nap, making him that much more fussy.
I would suggest trying to put him down at the first sign of him being sleepy, or if you are already doing that, and it's not working, try putting him down half an hour earlier than usual.
As someone else suggested, check out Dr. Sears. He has some extremely useful information.
Good luck!

Hi Chelsea, thanks for stopping by! I tried what you suggested and it worked on Monday! Unfortunately on Tuesday, Goose was onto me and naps were twice as difficult. I think he is teething, plus this nap thing has been an ongoing problem since birth. :( I'm a big a fan of attachment parenting, and was actually practicing it until about a week ago, when Goose began protesting his baby carrier. That's why I had him in his crib, I was literally left with no other option, since he had previously been taking all his naps in the Ergo while I did chores around the house. Today I am trying a different tactic. I'm trying to play with him all day until he is exhausted and simply MUST fall asleep....right? sigh... :)

Hello,
I had to laugh when I read this post. My daughter is expecting her first baby in a few weeks. She has everything all planned out. LOL She has the day she expects the baby to come all plan and then how everything will work out when it does get here. Boy is she in for a surprise. LOL. I keep trying to prepare her that babies have a mind of all thier own. LOL I agree with Debbie.Goose will be fine.
Hugs,
Elizabeth
