Colic Roars Its Ugly Head - againnnnnnn.

I really wish doctors could explain Colic better than just saying, Oh its an endless bout of crying for no known reason. I mean, there has to be a reason right? Ugh. Goose cried from 7am to about 9pm yesterday, taking small little breaks to nap. He is also suddenly not sleeping through the night, having gone back to waking at 3am for snacks. What is up little man?!

As a breastfeeding mom, the thing I keep thinking is what did I eat this weekend that was different than usual?? I did eat some extremely hot chili on Sunday night. Could that be it? I have read conflicting views on whether what you eat actually goes into your milk at all, so I'm somewhat torn on if that actually caused the problem - but it makes since right?

As for the nightwaking, I've read that babies have growth spurts around 3 months, so that may explain his renewed interested in midnight snacks. If any of you have experience with any of this, please share your story!! It will help me tremendously to cope with the stress of non-stop crying on very little sleep, to hear how others handle it. Thanks for reading!! Signed - Proud Mom to Mr. Colicy Fussy-Pants

It is just a season and will eventually go away... I also think it comes and goes too. Just wait a little while and it'll be gone. I would be more careful of what I ate to see if that helped though. Less spicy and caffeine.

I'll share my advice for what it's worth. It's probably not worth a whole lot because I think mama's have instincts of what is best for their kids and may just be your own trial and error. Regardless, I'll go ahead and share some ideas.

One thing I've found is that if I "wear" the baby (like in the baby bjorn) for 3 hours at least a day (before the crying starts, like in the morning) it significantly reduces or gets rid of the crying. Not sure why but learned about it in Dr. Sears' The Fussy Baby book. I highly recommend reading that one!

Another thing I do is let the baby cry by himself in his room if nothing will console him. Sometimes this helps both of us--him to relax, and me to maintain sanity. Obviously I wouldn't do this for hours on end though.

One other thing, that I'm sure everyone has a different opinion on--I don't ever change anything in my diet for breastfeeding. Of course I would if there was a serious allergy or something (like rash or vomiting or something). But I think that breastfeeding--no matter what you eat--is still the healthiest food for baby and it's good for the baby to get used to a varied diet. Anyway, not scientific just my opinion. I think I'd probably wean sooner if I had to change all kinds of my eating habits while breastfeeding, and I think it is more important that I stay happy with it so baby gets all those health benefits of breastfeeding.

I wish you the very best. This makes the most stressful time. My first was this way, and it was so hard!

Oh, I'm so sorry that Mr. Fussy Pants is fussing again! My first child was a colicy baby too! I didn't breast feed, but used to work in the neonatal unit in the hospital. We had many moms who pumped to bring milk for their babies. I do remember one kid whose mom had eaten cabbage (the breast milk smelled like cabbage) and he had a hard time with stomach pain after drinking that milk. Maybe it was the chili you ate??? Who knows, but I do hope he feels better now.

I agree with the wearing your baby in a carrier as much as possible. I also recommend The Happiest Baby On The Block by Dr. Harvey Karp. You might be able to get the book or video from your local library.

Night waking/nursing always came right before a big growth spurt with my boys. ((Hugs)) for you and your little one!
